id Software's prequel sends the Slayer into a medieval war against Hell and slows him down on purpose. It was the biggest launch in id's history, three million players in its first week, and on 14 September 2026 its UK price came down to £44.99 for good.
Stand and fight
Where DOOM Eternal was about dashing, The Dark Ages is about standing your ground. The Shield Saw blocks, parries and can be thrown, and much of the combat is reading green projectiles and batting them back. It feels like a tank rather than a jet, which is exactly the point.
For the first time in DOOM you pilot things: a cybernetic dragon and a thirty-storey Atlan mech. id calls these its largest levels to date, and the id Tech 8 engine lets you smash much of the scenery.
A proper expansion
Revelations, released on 7 July 2026, adds new levels, new demons, the Chain Spear and another Ripatorium arena for £17.99. Fine-grained difficulty sliders let you tune game speed and damage separately, which makes it more approachable than earlier DOOMs.
Where it stumbles
Some critics called it surprisingly safe, or the weakest of the modern trilogy, and missed the signature glory kills. On PC the floor is high: a graphics card with hardware ray tracing and 8 GB of memory, sixteen gigabytes of RAM and an NVMe SSD are all required. The Steam version uses Denuvo.
Who should buy it
Shooter fans who want something heavier and more tactical than Eternal. If you have Game Pass Premium, Ultimate or PC Game Pass, it is already included.

Since 14 September 2026 the standard edition is £44.99 on Steam, the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store. The Premium Edition is £60.99 and adds a skin pack, a digital artbook and soundtrack, and the Revelations expansion. If you already own the game, the Premium Upgrade costs £22.99, and Revelations alone is £17.99.
The arithmetic is worth a second look. A new buyer who wants the expansion pays £60.99 for the Premium Edition, less than the standard edition plus Revelations (£62.98). An existing owner who only wants more to play should buy Revelations alone at £17.99 rather than the £22.99 Premium Upgrade.
